ABSTRACT

TITLE: Luz y ritmos circadianos.

TITLE: Light and Circadian Rhythms.

Sr. D. Joachim Stormly Hansen

More powerful than any alarm clock is your own circadian rhythms. These arise from a complex network of coupled circadian oscillators, generating the ‘day within’. Circadian rhythms have a vast impact on subjective wellbeing, sleep timing and health. For this timing system to have value, it needs to be entrained to the environmental light/ dark cycle, to ensure that internal and external time coincide. Research within the last 20 years has shown the role of a new receptor system within the eye (mpRGC), in which the retina detects the changes in light exposure from waking up to bedtime, to allow the body’s master clock SCN to entrain. As a consequence the eye is no longer only the organ of vision, it is also involved in other, non-image forming responses such as the synchronizing of the body’s rhythms. This new knowledge has sparked interest form the lighting industry, clients and architects to integrate this new knowledge, calling for a new more ’physiological’ architecture. This is commonly known as ’Circadian Lighting’ or ‘Human Centric Lighting’. But what is it, and how do we go from theory towards meaningful implementation?
